Dear Mike,
Happy Birthday! I hope you’re doing well and all your projects/ventures are going very well, too. Oh, and of course that you’re having a fantastic 36th birthday! Okay, since I never got a chance to actually physically talk to you, or really communicate (yes, my tweets never got a reply/ RT..) with you, I thought this letter would be a good means of telling you what you, and Linkin Park mean to me.
I never liked music; my dad would play things like Leonard Cohen, Suzanne Vega (who can expect a young teen to enjoy that?); the stuff on the radio/ TV never impressed me either, in fact it had an almost repulsive effect on me. The themes flaunted in pop/ R&B and most hip-hop were nauseating; it seemed as if all they cared about was big money, parties and alcohol. And if not that, then frivolously-presented relationship boo-hoos and cheesy love-songs. Sickening, yes?
It was somewhere in the summer of 2011 (I was thirteen then) that I randomly came across Breaking the Habit, played as the background music in a YouTube video. Fact is, I never really fitted in with my peers and was always told that I was weird and didn’t belong within the crowd. At times I’d feel really lonely and upset about that too..and as far as entertainment goes, not everyone appreciated a thirteen-year-old girl to like Ben 10 and related action/sci-fi shows on Cartoon Network. Music, like I said, never clicked either.
The moment I heard Breaking the Habit, though, I instantly felt like there was more to music, that other side I had never witnessed. I felt like my feelings were being addressed artistically and the lyrics drew me towards the music like a magnet. I started listening to more of your band, and noticed how it was unique in terms of the content and themes. Then, of course, there was Chester’s astounding vocal capability in action and the instrumental side to LP –who can’t appreciate that?
Apart from the teen-angst (that did encourage a little negativity but overall made me appreciate the music significantly because I could relate to it), there was this other really alluring side to the band. The socio-political themes expressed in later records were extremely awe-inspiring; they made me ponder over certain issues and the world in general.
Songs like Hands Held High, Wretches and Kings, No More Sorrow, etc increased my passion for the band and its incredible lyrics and fore-sightedness. Not to mention the masterfully-penned lines to songs like Castle of Glass, Iridescent, Powerless..it all cemented the view that the band was a smart choice for me, fortifying my admiration for it constantly.
Because I enjoyed the music so much, I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to look up the guys behind it—and it wasn’t! There are certainly a lot of things that get you “inspired” at this immature, indecisive age and to select role models can be quite an ordeal at times.
However, I found a lot of sure guidance and things to look up to within the band. I read about Chester’s wounded past and how he redeemed himself time after time. It was motivating because it highlighted how perseverance and strong will pays off.
I’ve always really loved art—painting, doodling, writing is all right up my alley. And there’s always that weird element intertwining itself in my interests. Your art is the epitome of weird..and I love that! I really like how you and the band strive to be different and unpredictable, and that is significantly reflected in your work. ( I’m also a big fan of your graphic art!) I like to think of you as a dynamic juke-box of exploding talent! (yeah, please don’t explode though—you work yourself out too much sometimes!)
Another passion of mine you guys have addressed head-on is climate change! I feel extremely strongly about animal rights/welfare and how habitat protection and awareness of global warming is crucial to our survival. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your efforts with Music for Relief and Power the World. Access to renewable energy solutions is essential and millions of people are deprived of this. I’m really glad Linkin Park feel strongly about this grave issue, too.
Also, I appreciate how the band made personal growth and matured at an individual level. I like the fact that you don’t believe in looking like a rock-star; the crazy hair, rough clothing and dramatic makeup don’t make the rock-star, the music does. I like that you’re through trying to look or act a certain way just to appeal that certain audience. It makes me put down a lot of false notions about musicians and people overall, another reason I found to look up to you and the band—it always gives me reason to mature (or try to in the long run).
So, although I’m sure I went on more than I should have, I think you can see how greatly you influence my life. I’ve become a hardcore soldier because of all these elements stacking up and each day, be it MFR, an LPTV or maybe just a tweet, I grow to love the band more and more.
So here’s a sincere thank you Mike, for being so unique and inspiring. I’m glad Linkin Park came like a punch in the face right when I could have chosen something immature and corny. You rouse hundreds of teens like me all around the world and I’ll always be extremely thankful for that!
Okay, sorry for droning on about all this..you probably want your b-day cake now, don’t you? Have an awesome birthday!
Soldier out,
Hya .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE!
My name is Steph, My first LP CD was given to me by my Dad for my forth birthday, so I haven’t gone a day without listening to you guys for 13 years now. Thank you for changing mine ,as well as thousands of other people’s lives! I think were all aware of the impact music and the arts can have on us, and the power it has to heal and make something pretty ugly, beautiful again. Tons of love from SOUTH AFRICA! (PS- We are looking forward to seeing you guys again sometime in the hopefully-not-to-distant future.)
Hi! Happy years Mike!
I’m from Turkey,Istanbul and my name is Merve. I know a little English and sorry for my grammar wrongs. I am your little soldier. Thank you for giving me my favourite band. You’re a genius. You can understand the people and make them feel better. I know you are very busy and this is like impossible but can I send more letters to you? You Rock!
Hey there Mike, first of all many happy returns of the day! I’m Aditya from India, just one among millions of nameless fans of yours, whom you have inspired a lot. I have been a part of the LPU for about 7 years and a Linkin Park fan for almost a decade now and. You have inspired me a lot both in as a person and my outwards towards the world. This old saying of yours has always stuck to me:
“When we started the band, it was because we were waiting for a sound that never happened. We got tired of waiting, and we decided to just do it ourselves”
I have always tried to apply that to my life and believe in myself. Thank you for being a big inspiration to me, and for Linkin Park 🙂
It’s over 9 years I’m waiting to see Linkin Park live as like some of my friends here I was never fortunate to fly overseas to see you. Kinda sucks being one of the oldest LPUers who hasn’t seen you yet. But I haven’t settled, some of the passionate fans here throughout the country came together and we are trying to get the band here to India. I co-run the biggest Indian LP fan site Linkin Park India Unlimited, and we have already managed to get Linkin Park records being released on launch, encouraging people to buy and not pirate and so much more. In this journey, I have made many new friends throughout the world, and here we have been in touch with music label records and organizers. Not only we are trying to get you here, but also learning how the industry and the world works. Life lessons. Here are some of our achievements so far, and this is a piece by me on the LIVING THINGS launch which we had a celebration here!
I hope to see my most favourite band in the world and inspiration here soon, and more hopefully meet you and thank you presonally. And if I may add, you are already a great painter apart from a musician, you should write a book too! I’m sure Anna would agree. I see myself quoting you many times in my daily life. 🙂
Wishing you good health, happiness and success for all years to come. Have a good one!
With Regards,
Aditya V. Iyer

Hello Mike,
How easy it is to keep talent and secret and hide from the rest of the world. No one will bother you with crazy expectations about your work, life-style, etc. Let’s face it, if you had chosen this way, your life would have been more relaxed and away from any spotlight. I can only imagine how often do you wish for such a life.
I use this special way to thank you for the life you live and for the decisions you made. Thank you for courage and doing the opposite. Thank you for being so patience with us crazy soldiers. Thank you for pushing you self over and over again. Thank you for staying down to earth. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
I wish you all the best for your birthday.
Nadja Seidel (Germany)
