The Swedish band John Moose has caused quite the stir up when they pre-released their album via mobile app. For free. So far that isn’t special at all, but there’s one little aspect which makes the whole project really innovative: you can only listen to the album when you’re in the woods.

Since their album features songs about escapism, the band feels that the listener will get most of it if they are amongst the trees. John Moose, the main character of the stories they tell through their songs, “finds himself stuck in the ambivalence between the civilization and its counterpart.”
The app uses a simple GPS signal to determine the user’s location as John Moose drummer Tobias Norén explains. The Google Maps Static API detects the wooded area through its specific green color which differs from parks, for example.
Since so many artists are partnering with different apps to release their music in an innovative way, we can only look forward to more Geo-location-based releases. Yes, Linkin Park, we are talking about you. Where would you want to listen to a future Linkin Park album?
